The Patients' Behbud Society
The Patients' Behbud Society for AKUH was founded in 2001 by well wishers of Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). Its main objective is to assist mustehiqeen patients to avail high quality health care at AKUH. The society's single source of funding is zakat contributions (and donations) received from individuals, staff and employees of AKU, and corporates, which in turn are disbursed to mustehiqeen in accordance with shariah. PBS has provided PKR 513 million in zakat assistance to 17, 695 mustehiq patients from 2001 - 2012.
The Society is a legal entity managed by a group of prominent citizens independent of AKUH and its accounts are audited annually by a reputed firm of Chartered Accountants.
