The Department of Radiology offers 24/7 services that cater to the needs of inpatients, outpatients and outside referrals by providing the best possible and modern diagnostic facilities in main Radiology (AKUH) and in off-campus facility of  Clifton Medical Services (CMS). It is also providing services to French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC), Kabul, Afghanistan trough tele-radiology.

The Department is certified by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) working under the regulatory requirements of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On an international level, the Department’s practices are certified by JCIA and ISO 9001: 2008. For quality assurance and radiation safety, regular audits and inspections are conducted by PNRA.


The Department caters to approximately 18,000 patients a month. It is fortified with a team of Radiologists, Research faculty, Medical Physicists and trained/certified Radiographers.

Services include state-of-the-art facilities of General / Special Radiography, Fluoroscopy, Ortho-pantomography and Cephalometry, Ultrasound, Color Doppler, CT Scan (64 Slice), MRI (1.5 Tesla, 18 Channel, with Cardiac imaging applications, Cardiac MRI and CTA), Cerebral Coiling, Whole Body Scanning, Vascular Angiography, Hepatobiliary, Urologic, Neuro Intervention, Digital Subtraction Angiography, Nuclear Medicine, Bone Densitometry, Interventional Radiology, Paediatric Radiology, Women Imaging (Mammography/ Mammotome) and Dexa Scan.

All IV Iodinated contrast injections are by Iso-osmolar Contrast Agents, in line with international recommendations for higher patient safety.

Committed to quality service and following the need of the time, the Department is moving towards film-less radiology and is now equipped with Picture Archiving and Communicating System (PACS). The General radiography procedures inclusive of IVP and Flouro are carried out on Computed Radiography System (CR) and Digital Retrofit (DR) which has minimized the patient waiting time, radiation dose, report turnaround time, film rejection rate, film loss, simultaneous viewing of images by multiple users, and increased throughput.

Educational Programmes / Undergraduate and Postgraduate Training

The Department has a structured Residency Programme, which inducts PGME trainees every year. The Department also offers a structured Radiographers Training Programme. The induction criterion for this training programme is B.Sc Degree (Graduate of Science with 14 years of education). The duration of the programme is two years.
