Intensive Care Services
AKUH offers comprehensive Intensive Care Services to its patients through four main facilities: Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
Located on the ground floor of Khimji Building , the service offers a total of 16 beds with 2:1 nursing care. CCU provides care to all adults and senior citizens who may have any of the variety of cardiac diseases requiring intensive care. These diagnoses includes Acute Coronary Syndrome, Myocardial Infarction, Complete Heart Block, Unstable Angina, Congestive Heart Failure, Pulmonary Oedema, Post Angioplasty, Post Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), Arrhythmias, s/p cardiac or respiratory arrest, and Cardiac Tamponade. The service also accommodates patients of medicine service who require mechanical ventilator support.

Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)
Located on the first floor of the main hospital building, the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 9-bedded area reserved for cardiac and thoracic surgical patients requiring the highest level of monitoring and treatment. Patients are primarily admitted after cardiac surgeries. Patients may also be admitted pre-operatively for cardiac surgeries. Common diagnoses include coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, aortic disease, congenital heart disease, lethal arrhythmias, coronary bypass graft, valve replacement, etc. The expertise of the CICU nursing staff provides an exceptionally high level of care. Most of the staff is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Located on the first floor of the main hospital building, the service offers an 11-bedded Adult ICU and a three-bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with 1:1 nursing care. Services provided by the unit include management of respiratory failure, sepsis, liver failure, renal failure, multi-system organ failure, GI bleeding, diabetic ketoacidosis, drug overdose, cancer, stroke, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, cardiopulmonary arrest, etc.
All patients are supervised by a team of critical care physicians from an interdisciplinary group and supported by specialised nursing and paramedical staff. The facility has state-of-the-art equipment including ventilators, invasive haemodynamic monitoring systems and haemodialysis.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Located on the first floor of Private Wing, the NICU at AKUH provides tertiary level neonatal intensive care to newborn babies from not only Karachi but also adjoining areas of Sindh and Balochistan.
The service comprises of 14 critical beds offering state-of-the-art monitoring, mechanical ventilation (seven beds), and intensive care nursing access to several sub-specialties like neonatal cardiology, surgery, nephrology, haematology and orthopaedics. A specialised team of neonatologists and fellows, coupled with trained nursing and paramedical staff provides quality care to NICU patients.
A recent development is the incorporation of care to cardiothoracic surgical babies suffering from congenital heart diseases. The NICU is also the only approved training unit for neonatal fellowship in Pakistan .
