Practical Guide for International Patients​

The International Patient Office will be responsible for coordinating your arrival at the hospital for treatment and your return trip by offering you the following services:​

  • Making clinical appointments.
  • Assistance with the medical visa issuance process.
  • Organization of flight logistics (stretcher, oxygen and other special needs)
  • Organizing and updating medical forms, including fitness to fly.
  • Personalized customer care during registration, admission, billing, discharge and post-hospitalization follow-up, including medication delivery.
  • Provision of accessible accommodation for family members.
  • Airport transfers.
  • Reliable and safe internet.
  • Interpreters.
  • Insurance assistance.
  • Ability to change currency from US Dollars to Kenyan Shillings.

Obtaining a medical visa

You may need a medical visa to seek treatment in Kenya. Once we obtain the detailed medical history, we will issue you a letter to help you obtain the medical visa.

What you should do before traveling

  • Check with your doctor that you are fit to travel.
  • Find out about the procedure/treatment you will receive at our hospital and the planned follow-up. In some cases, your treatment protocol may be changed after the doctor meets and examines you in person.​​​​

Important documents:

  • Passport and visa for yourself and anyone traveling with you. (Citizens of Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and Rwanda do not need a visa to travel to Kenya).
  • Medical documents such as x-rays, MRIs, immunization records, prescriptions and any other health records relevant to your treatment.
  • Medical card, credit cards and debit cards, if applicable.​

Payment options

The hospital supports different payment methods, including:

a) Health insurance:

If your medical insurance covers AKUHN Hospital services, you can use it to pay for your medical care. Don't forget to bring your medical insurance card

b) Direct bank transfer:

You can transfer money directly to our bank account. Bank details are provided upon request. For patients in Kampala and Arusha, payments can be made in local currency to our bank account with Diamond Trust Bank.

c) In cash:

The hospital accepts payment in Kenyan shillings. A bank is located in the hospital to facilitate foreign exchange transactions if necessary. Our staff will assist our patients in this process.
