Interventional Nephrology: A Solution for Blocked Fistulas in Dialysis Patients

 
<p>​The Aga Khan University Hospital launched the Interventional Nephrology service on 2nd May 2019. The inauguration event was attended by Mr. Hans Kedzierski (CEO, Health Services, Pakistan), Dr. Farhat Abbas (Professor &amp; Associate Vice Provost, Surgery) and Dr. Nuzhat Farouqi (Service Line Chief, Kidney and Bladder Service Line) amongst other doctors and staff. </p><div>Interventional Nephrology is an emerging subspecialty of Nephrology and it focuses on providing continuity of care to chronic kidney disease and dialysis patients. Recent data has emphasized that nephrologists can successfully perform these procedures with excellent results.</div><div>
</div><div>The event was inaugurated by Dr. Nuzhat Farouqi who addressed the audience on a variety of topics. In her address she first introduced Dr. Ali Raza Khan who has taken the initiative of providing this service at the Aga Khan University Hospital. Dr. Nuzhat stressed the importance of creating learning opportunities for resident doctors. She further spoke about taking a sustainable approach to enhance the accessibility for the Interventional Nephrology service. She ended her address with an inspiring quote: “Dream, struggle, be brave, be resilient and deliver the best of the best”.</div><div>
</div><div>Dr. Ali Raza Khan took to the podium and gave a detailed presentation of the service. He spoke about the challenges the doctors in Pakistan faced while treating the patients and the difficulties the patients experienced due to limited or no access to this service. He described how Interventional Nephrology would reduce treatment cost for patients and also increase the quality of dialysis points.  He further briefed the audience about the machinery required and the benefits associated with Interventional Nephrology.  The event was concluded with an award giving ceremony for the concerned department.</div><div>
