What is Brain Tumor?

Brain Tumours, also commonly known as the central nervous system tumours, develop due to uncontrolled growth of cells around the brain. Categorised either as malignant or benign, brain tumours can grow at a rapid rate. Therefore timely diagnosis can play a critical role in increasing the chances of a successful treatment.

Every year, June 8th is commemorated as Brain Tumour Awareness Day globally, and is celebrated to spread awareness regarding the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Commonly classified under four categories 1 (least malignant) to 4 (most malignant), brain tumour categories enable treating doctors to formulate the right treatment plan as per the patient's healthcare needs.

Symptoms

Symptoms caused by brain tumours vary depending on the size, location, and intensity of the tumour.

Incidence and Prevention

The likelihood of brain tumours generally increases with age. However, key risk factors of the disease like one's lifestyle, surroundings and family history also have a significant bearing.

Brain tumours are more common in overweight people, hence maintaining a healthy lifestyle becomes that much more important to avoid the risk of the disease.

The risk of a brain tumour is high if you have someone in your family who is suffering from the disease as well.

Treatment and Support

Depending on the tumour's growth, there are different treatment options and combinations that the doctor may advise on, depending on the extent and intensity of the tumour. Common treatment options and modalities include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.

Fighting and ultimately beating brain tumours largely depends on being aware of the early signs and symptoms and seeking timely medical help. Providing a supportive environment for those fighting brain tumours and undergoing this life-changing experience is essential, a role we must all play.

For more information, visit our Oncology or Mind and Brain Services.
