Electroconvulsive Therapy

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective medical treatment for specific severe mental health conditions. It involves the brief application of a controlled electrical current to the brain, inducing a therapeutic seizure. This process helps stimulate changes in brain chemistry, often leading to a rapid and significant improvement in symptoms of certain mental illnesses.

ECT is a safe, well-regulated procedure performed under anesthesia with meticulous monitoring to ensure patient safety. At AKUH, we offer compassionate and expert ECT services in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment, with a strong focus on patient comfort, dignity, and well-being.

Conditions We Treat

ECT is primarily considered when other treatments, such as medication and psychotherapy, have proven ineffective or when a rapid response is crucial. It is particularly beneficial for:

  • Severe depression: Including major depressive disorder with psychotic features, treatment-resistant depression, and depression with catatonia.
  • Bipolar disorder: Especially during manic or mixed episodes when symptoms are severe or life-threatening.
  • Schizophrenia: Particularly in cases with catatonia or when other antipsychotic medications have not been effective.
  • Catatonia: A state of unresponsiveness or abnormal movements, which can occur in various mental health conditions.

Our Services

We offer a comprehensive ECT programme that includes:

  • Thorough evaluation: Each patient undergoes a detailed psychiatric assessment to determine suitability for ECT. This includes a review of medical history, current medications, and previous treatments.
  • Individualised treatment plans: Treatment protocols are tailored to each patient's specific needs, including the number and frequency of treatments.
  • Modern ECT techniques: We utilise modern ECT equipment and techniques, including brief pulse stimulation and careful monitoring of brain activity (EEG) and vital signs during the procedure.
  • Anaesthesia and muscle relaxation: ECT is performed under general anaesthesia with muscle relaxants, ensuring the patient is comfortable and experiences no pain or discomfort during the procedure.
  • Post-treatment care and monitoring: Patients are closely monitored in a recovery area after each treatment until they are fully awake and alert. We also provide ongoing support and follow-up care.

Our Multidisciplinary Team

Our services are delivered by a team of dedicated healthcare professionals, including:

  • Psychiatrists: Experienced psychiatrists who specialise in ECT and oversee all aspects of treatment.
  • Anaesthesiologists: Skilled anaesthesiologists who administer anesthesia and monitor patients during the procedure.
  • Nurses: Trained nurses who provide pre- and post-treatment care and support.
