Paediatric Peritoneal Dialysis
When a child's kidneys are no longer working properly, peritoneal dialysis (PD) can help remove waste and excess fluid from their body. Unlike traditional dialysis, which uses a machine, PD uses the lining of the child's abdomen (peritoneum) as a natural filter. At AKUH, we understand the complexities of caring for a child with this condition. Our dedicated team provides specialised treatment and support to ensure your child receives the best possible care.
Conditions We Treat
- Chronic kidney disease
- End-stage renal disease
- Acute renal failure
How PD Works
- A thin tube (catheter) is placed in your child's belly.
- Sterile fluid (dialysis solution) flows through the catheter into the belly cavity.
- Waste products and extra fluid pass from the blood into the dialysis solution.
- The used solution is drained out, carrying away waste.
Benefits of PD for Children
- More flexible treatment schedule compared to traditional dialysis.
- Can be performed at home, allowing for greater normalcy in a child's life.
- May be more comfortable for some children.
