​​​​Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a swelling in one or both arms and legs. It is a side effect of cancer treatment and is caused by removal of or damage to the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs located throughout the body that carry a clear fluid known as lymph. Lymph helps to fight tumours, infections etc. If a blockage develops in your lymphatic system (system of lymph nodes) it can lead to lymphedema, causing accumulation of fluid which leads to swelling. 

There are two types of lymphedema:

• Primary lymphedema, which is caused by the abnormal development of the lymph system. Symptoms may be present at birth or may occur later in life.
  

• Secondary lymphedema, which is caused by damage to the lymph system. The lymph system may be damaged or blocked by infection, injury, cancer treatment, and lymph nodes removal, radiation to the affected area or scar tissue from radiation therapy or surgery.
