Aga Khan University Hospital and Karura Community Chapel hold a free medical camp

Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) and Karura Community Chapel held their annual free medical camp at Challeta Primary School in Runda to offer free screening and treatment to over 1500 patients suffering from various ailments. The camp was based on a referral system prepared by community health workers who visited sick people in the villages of Githogoro, Muchatha, Ruaka, Gathanga, Gachie, Ndenderu, and Huruma in Kiambu County.

More than 45 members of staff from Aga Khan University Hospital dedicated their time and profession to serve the men, women and children who had been given referral cards to the medical camp. According to Eunice Tole, Programme Director of Accident and Emergency unit at AKUH, “a total of 165 women were offered help and advised on how to cope with their difficulties by our Obstetrics and Gynaecology doctors and nurses. Staff from our paediatric unit screened and treated 365 children for various ailments including eye, ear and teeth problems.”

The patients thanked the hospital for bringing healthcare services close to them free of charge. Jane Muthoni, a patient who had come to see a  gynecologist  said: “We are  grateful  to the Aga  Khan University Hospital and  Karura  Chapel for making it possible  for  us to  receive specialized treatment which would normally be beyond  our resources.”

Each year, AKUH partners with Karura Community Chapel to hold a free medical camp aimed at providing treatment to needy people in the society, who cannot access medical help due to lack of funds.
