Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) has launched a Multidisciplinary Weight Management clinic to provide coordinated, evidence-based care for individuals seeking support to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
The clinic will also offer care to individuals living with weight-related health conditions.
The service brings together specialists in endocrinology, gastroenterology, surgery, family medicine and nutrition to provide comprehensive assessments and personalised treatment plans based on each patient's medical needs, health goals and lifestyle.
Through this multidisciplinary approach, patients will have access to medical evaluation and treatment, nutrition and lifestyle support, and surgical interventions where clinically appropriate.
“The coordinated care model will enable specialists to jointly assess each patient and recommend the most appropriate interventions for their individual needs," said Professor Christopher Opio, Section Head for Gastroenterology and Coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Weight Management Service.
The service will also support the prevention and management of health conditions associated with excess weight, including diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease and joint problems, among others.
“Weight management is complex, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each person's circumstances, medical needs and health goals are different, which is why a coordinated approach is so important," added Prof Opio.
The establishment of the service reflects AKUH,N's commitment to integrated, patient-centred care and to addressing the growing burden of obesity and related non-communicable diseases.
“By bringing specialists from different disciplines together, we can assess each patient comprehensively and develop a safe, realistic and personalised plan. Our goal is not simply to help patients lose weight, but to improve their overall health, manage related conditions and support sustainable, long-term change," added Dr Eric Njenga, Section Head, Diabetology and Endocrinology.
Individuals seeking professional support with weight management, including those who have weight-related health concerns, are encouraged to speak to their healthcare provider or contact the Hospital for an assessment.
