Aga Khan University Hospital opens Urodynamics unit

Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi has opened a Urodynamics Unit which will provide evidence based investigations and care for women and men with bladder problems.

The Unit is equipped with a new urodynamics machine which studies the functions of the bladder and bladder neck in males and females. The tests carried out include uroflow, voiding/ filling phase assessment and bladder neck pressures.

An independent urogynaecology clinic runs at the Unit for women with lower urinary problems. This is a one stop clinic where patients are assessed and treatment initiated. The clinic is held on alternate Mondays on appointment basis. Patients can self-refer, or be referred by urologists, gynaecologists or any other health professional.

Generally the genesis of treatment of patients is based on diagnosis made from a history of the disease and examination. Urodynamics plays an important role in deciding who can benefit from surgery.

Patients are advised to come with a comfortably full bladder. The tests take approximately an hour and are carried out when a patient is awake. The process is not painful and the risk to a patient is minimal.
