Aga Khan University Hospital partners with Posta Corporation to launch commemorative stamps

The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) has launched commemorative stamps in partnership with the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) as part of the hospital’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

Through the partnership PCK will be selling three different stamps featuring three iconic buildings at the hospital. The first stamp will feature the old ward building which was the first structure of the hospital when it opened in 1958 with the other two featuring the Heart and Cancer Centre and the upcoming Aga Khan University block. The stamps are available at all Posta branches across the country.

PCK General Manager, Mail Services Milka Mugwe hailed the new stamps as an innovative way to tell the hospital’s story.

“We have beautiful collections for all Kenyans. The stamps will tell you a good story on what Aga Khan University Hospital is doing for humanity,” she said.

The Hospital also launched a coffee table book that documents its history and growth.

In July last year, AKUH,N launched activities to celebrate the hospital’s 60 years of existence. These included six free open-heart surgeries, 60 free PET CT scans and free medical camps targeting 6,000 Kenyans.

“I am pleased to note that so far 1,224 doctors, mostly from the public sector, have gone through fully sponsored Continuous Medical Education sessions,” AKUHN’s CEO Shawn Bolouki said.

Nyeri County Deputy Governor Dr Caroline Karugu called for enhanced partnership between corporates and county governments to bridge the gap in the provision of public healthcare.

“Through the equipment leasing model for example, we now have mammogram and MRI-Magnetic resonance imaging facilities. The gap however remains in the expertise. I believe this is where partners like AKUH,N and others can come in to help with the knowledge transfer so that we can empower our hardworking and committed public health workers to do more,” she said.

Aga Khan University President Firoz Rasul announced that there were advanced plans to construct a 100-bed children’s specialty hospital to provide advanced pediatric care.

“We are also working on accreditation as a Stroke, Chest and Trauma centre, the only one of its kind in the region. We plan to improve our approach to complicated surgeries, with the introduction of gamma knife technology,” he added.
