New dental treatment plans in the implant era

Implants are the future of tooth replacement. Over the years, they have evolved as a more conservative, safer and aesthetic option to the traditional methods like dentures and bridges.Dental implants are made of titanium – a bio-compatible material that serves as a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth.

“Dental implants are beneficial because there is no need for grinding down teeth to hold a tooth replacement,” says Dr Alberto Casella. He was speaking at a Continuing Dental Education (CDE) session on Implant Dentistry for members of the Ugandan Dental Association. The session was hosted by the Aga Khan University Medical Centre.

Dr Casella, who works at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, is a qualified dental surgeon with a Masters in advanced periodontology and implantology from Sweden. He has practiced for over 20 years in East Africa.

"Patients trust the dentists to give them the best option of tooth replacement, not just in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of biologically, socially and economically viable options,” he says, “knowledge sharing sessions like these help us become better dentists to make better decisions for our patients who place their trust in us.”

Forty-five dentists attended the sessions. They welcomed the discussions and invited AKU and AKUH to host more sessions.
