High Risk Pregnancy Follow-Up
Overview
Our specialists are among the most experienced in the region in managing high-risk pregnancies — where you, your baby, or both face an increased likelihood of complications during or after delivery. We know these pregnancies can be physically, emotionally, and financially demanding. Our multidisciplinary team ensures your pregnancy receives the close monitoring and personalised attention it deserves.
Factors that may increase risk include:
Pregnancy history: a history of recurrent miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, pre-term birth, or diabetes raises the likelihood of recurrence in future pregnancies.
Complications in the current pregnancy: such as slowed foetal growth, rhesus blood group incompatibility, or bleeding from a low-lying placenta.
Multiple pregnancies: twins or higher-order multiples carry a higher risk of small-for-gestational-age babies, pre-term birth, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Maternal health conditions: heart disease, thyroid disorders, epilepsy, poorly controlled asthma or diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease — whether from the condition itself or its treatment.
Lifestyle factors: smoking, substance use, obesity, and inactivity can all affect pregnancy outcomes.
Genetic conditions: carrying or being affected by conditions such as sickle cell disease, thalassemia, or G6PD deficiency may increase the risk of complications or of passing the condition to your baby.
Caring for a high-risk pregnancy may include:
Preconception assessment
More frequent antenatal visits
Specialised screening, such as genetic testing or advanced ultrasound
Timely intervention — for example, early delivery in cases of severe hypertension
