Q: Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)

Using a pencil-tip size cut in the artery at the wrist or groin a slender flexible tube (catheter) is threaded through the blood vessels to the fibroid's blood supply where small particles the size of grains of sand are released to float downstream and block the small blood vessels and deprive the fibroid of nutrients. The fibroids will then shrink reducing the symptoms. Approximately 9 out of 10 women who undergo UFE report their symptoms go away completely or reduced to a great extent.
