Diabetes, a Growing Epidemic

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar levels. It affects around 422 million people worldwide and is one of the leading causes of death globally. Research studies have shown that its prevalence in Pakistan has reached over 17% and one in four people in the country over the age of 20 years is suffering from it. Taking preventative measures can stop this silent disease from taking lives.

Types of Diabetes

There are two main types of this condition: Type 1 and Type 2.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when our body produces little or no insulin, a hormone that controls the glucose level in bloodstream. People with Type 1 diabetes have to use insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when our body produces insulin, but the body does not respond correctly to it, giving rise to insulin resistance.

Besides Type 1 and Type 2, Gestational Diabetes results only during pregnancy, when other hormone changes in the body affect insulin.

Causes and Risk Factors

There are no known causes of Diabetes. However, people must be cautious of certain risk factors that may increase chances of its onset.

• Family history of Diabetes

• Personal history of Gestational Diabetes

• Unhealthy lifestyle

• Age

• An injury of or infection in Pancreas, the gland that produces insulin

• High blood pressure

• Abnormal blood cholesterol levels

Symptoms

Watch out for some of the common symptoms of Diabetes, including increased thirst and hunger, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. If these symptoms are not addressed timely and appropriately, they may lead to kidney failure, blindness, and other complexities.

Prevention

There is no cure for Diabetes. However, healthy lifestyle choices and medications, if prescribed, help manage this condition.
