Power Your Life - An Employee Health Awareness Session

 
<span style="font-family: helvetica;">On 29 September 2016, an Awareness Session to celebrate World Heart Day was held for the employees of The Aga Khan University Hospital. The theme of the awareness session was adapted from the World Heart Federation, and revolved around creating heart-healthy environments. This encompassed promoting environmental factors and information necessary for a healthy heart, and also included sharing new advancements and techniques available in the field. The awareness session was used as a platform to update the employees about the latest treatments for heart diseases and help them identify the symptoms of cardiac diseases.</span><br style="font-family: helvetica;"/><br style="font-family: helvetica;"/><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The session began with a welcome address by Amina Khan, Nurse Manager for the Heart, Lungs and Vascular Service Line at The Aga Khan University Hospital. This was followed by Dr. Aamir Hameed, Associate Professor, Cardiology, leading the proceedings of the event. The sessions included  Adult and Paediatric Cardiologists both, who discussed topics like ‘How to Diagnose a Heart Problem Without Symptoms’, ‘Cholesterol Deposits in Children’, ‘Role of AICD (automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) and Pacemakers‘, ‘New Techniques Used for Angioplasties’, ‘Nursing Care of Cardiac Patients’ and Overview of Bypass and  Valve Surgeries.</span><br style="font-family: helvetica;"/><br style="font-family: helvetica;"/><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Before the session, different hospital units celebrated a World Heart Week, where the staff was encouraged to participate in a competition to decorate their wards and units with models of the circulatory system to promote the importance of a healthy heart. The Cardiac Care Unit won this competition and was given an award by Dr. Saulat Fatimi, Service Line Chief for Heart, Lungs and Vascular, The Aga Khan University Hospital. A lucky draw for the employees was also conducted and five winners were selected and given prizes.   </span><br style="font-family: helvetica;"/><span style="font-family: helvetica;">At the end of the event, Dr. Saulat Fatimi, Service Line Chief for Heart, Lungs and Vascular Service Line, summarized the session by focusing on how important it is to not ignore the health of one’s heart; the key to ‘ Power Your Life’</span>
