<div>As we near the end of breast cancer awareness month, we are left with a strong reminder of the fact that Pakistan still has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in Asia. It also remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. A World Health Organization (WHO) study estimates that breast cancer constitutes around 10% of all cancers diagnosed globally. It is likely to impact women a hundred times more than men.
</div><div>
</div><div>Breast cancer causes cells in the breast tissue to grow out of control. If you notice a breast lump, inverted or bleeding nipples, or any abnormal changes in the size or shape of your breasts, don’t ignore it. Even if the lump is not painful, consult a Family Medicine expert or a Breast Surgeon immediately, as these could be potential symptoms of breast cancer.</div><div>
</div><div>In Pakistan, the rate of breast cancer is higher due to late diagnosis and delayed treatment. Combined with the lack of awareness and the social stigma surrounding it, one in every nine women is at risk of having breast cancer in her lifetime.</div><div>
</div><div>Breast cancer can be treated and cured completely if diagnosed and treated early. For an early detection, it is recommended that you self-examine your breasts regularly. Furthermore, women of the age 40 years and above must get yearly mammogram screening done. </div><div>
