Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at The Aga Khan University Hospital provides comprehensive, evidence-based care across the spectrum of women’s reproductive and gynaecological health.

Services include preconception counselling, antenatal care, labour and delivery, postpartum care, and management of both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies. Gynaecological services address menstrual disorders, abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, infections, family planning, menopausal health, and other reproductive health concerns.

The Department offers specialised expertise in gynaecological oncology, infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss, adolescent gynaecology, and minimally invasive and advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures. Office-based hysteroscopy services are available for select diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

A dedicated labour and delivery suite operates alongside a Well Baby Nursery and a fully equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), enabling coordinated care for mothers and newborns, including those requiring high-dependency monitoring. A 24-hour emergency service supports women with acute obstetric and gynaecological conditions. Complex cases are managed in a dedicated special care unit with multidisciplinary oversight.

Recognising the importance of maternal and early childhood health, the Department supports families beyond delivery through structured parenting and early childhood development initiatives. The Early Childhood Development – Parenting Readiness Education Programme (ECD PREP) integrates education, research, and clinical services to promote responsive caregiving from before birth through early childhood.

A dedicated Lactation Clinic provides specialised breastfeeding support through in-person and teleconsultation services, reinforcing maternal and newborn health in the immediate postnatal period.

Care is delivered in close collaboration with neonatology, paediatrics, oncology, internal medicine, surgery, and critical care teams to ensure coordinated management of complex conditions.

As part of a quaternary-care academic medical centre, the Department contributes to postgraduate training, research, and the advancement of women’s health standards while maintaining rigorous safety and clinical governance practices.
