Department of Oncology

Cancer care demands precision, coordination, and compassion. At The Aga Khan University Hospital, the Department of Oncology brings together medical oncology, radiation oncology, haematology, paediatric oncology, and palliative care within a unified multidisciplinary framework.

The Department provides comprehensive care for adult and paediatric cancers, as well as non-malignant haematological disorders. Diagnosis is supported by advanced imaging, including PET-CT, specialised laboratory services, pathology, and transfusion medicine, ensuring accurate staging and treatment planning.

Therapeutic strategies are developed through structured multidisciplinary tumour boards, with collaboration across surgery, radiology, pathology, and supportive care services. Treatment pathways may include chemotherapy, targeted or immunotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or combined modalities, sequenced according to established clinical protocols.

Chemotherapy and transfusion services are delivered through a dedicated Day Care Oncology Unit supported by specialised nursing teams. Radiation therapy is provided using modern treatment technologies designed to optimise tumour control while minimising effects on surrounding tissues.

Oncology care is closely integrated with emergency services, intensive care, and specialist medical units to support patients requiring complex or high-acuity management. Dedicated clinics in palliative care, nutrition, anticoagulation, and supportive services contribute to comprehensive cancer management across the continuum of care.

In addition to clinical services, the Department contributes to oncology research, clinical trials, and postgraduate training, maintaining rigorous standards of safety, ethics, and governance within a quaternary-care academic environment.
