Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry at The Aga Khan University Hospital provides comprehensive mental health services for children, adolescents, adults, and older persons. Care is delivered through multidisciplinary teams comprising psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing staff, occupational therapists, and speech therapists, ensuring structured and evidence-based management tailored to individual needs and cultural context.

The Department works in close collaboration with other medical and surgical specialties to support patients with coexisting physical and mental health conditions. Its mission includes advancing access to high-quality mental healthcare, promoting mental health awareness, conducting research grounded in the Pakistani context, and contributing to education and leadership in psychiatry.

Clinical services by the Department include:

  • Specialty clinics in child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric psychiatry

  • Psychotherapy services, including individual therapy, family therapy, couples therapy, and parenting support

  • The Child Learning and Behavioural Clinic (CLBC), offering collaborative assessment and management of developmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder

  • Psychological testing, including cognitive assessments and evaluation for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

  • Speech and occupational therapy services

The Department also provides inpatient psychiatric care and emergency services for individuals requiring close monitoring, stabilisation, or structured detoxification. A day-care rehabilitation programme operates six days a week, supporting functional recovery and reintegration.

As part of a quaternary-care academic medical centre, the Department contributes to postgraduate training, research, and community engagement initiatives while maintaining rigorous standards of professional practice and confidentiality.
