Dr Syed Mairajuddin Shah

Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer

Dr Syed Mairajuddin Shah serves as the Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer for Aga Khan University (AKU) Health Services, Pakistan and the French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC) in Kabul, Afghanistan. He additionally acts as the Regional Lead for Central Asia and the Middle East within the AKU-AKDN Global Quality and Patient Safety Office.

In his executive capacity, Dr Shah provides strategic leadership to foster a culture of high reliability, continuous improvement, and patient-centred care across the integrated healthcare network. His mandate encompasses overseeing accreditation readiness, risk management, and organisational learning, ensuring every patient receives consistently safe and compassionate care.

A strong advocate for data-driven decision-making, Dr Shah believes sustainable clinical excellence is achieved through engaged teams and resilient healthcare systems. He is dedicated to embedding quality into everyday practice, aligning his vision of better patient experiences and stronger clinical outcomes with the institution's overarching mission.

Since joining AKU in 1992 as a Research Medical Officer in Paediatrics, Dr Shah has undertaken a diverse leadership journey. He has served as Medical Director of Outreach Services and Chief Operating Officer for the Off-Campus Aga Khan Hospitals. Among his significant clinical governance milestones, he led all four off-campus hospitals to achieve SafeCare Level-5 certification in 2024, commissioned the new Diagnostic Centre at the Aga Khan Hospital, Garden in 2022, and played a pivotal role in the hospital’s JCIA and ISO accreditations. Furthermore, he has delivered over 500 educational sessions on healthcare quality to faculty and staff.

Dr Shah’s extensive administrative expertise is supported by a robust academic foundation. He earned his MBBS from Sindh Medical College, an MCPS in Family Medicine, and an MBA from IQRA University. Recognised globally, he holds fellowships and certifications from the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and the Healthcare Quality Certification Commission.

Alongside his leadership roles, Dr Shah remains active in academia as a Lecturer in the Department of Community Health Sciences, AKU and as a Family Physician in the Department of Family Medicine, AKUH.
