As the Chief Operating Officer of Outreach Health Services and Off-Campus Hospitals at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Syed Mohammad Sohail provides operational leadership for a vast and critical healthcare network, overseeing Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Medical Centres, Home Health Services, and four off-campus hospitals across Karachi and Hyderabad.

His leadership philosophy centres on putting people first, listening with empathy, and fostering honest teamwork and continuous learning. Mr Sohail’s forward-looking vision aims to drive patient care and operational growth by adopting smart digital tools, streamlining daily workflows, and using advanced data to track health trends and deliver faster, safer, and more personal care. He is dedicated to providing exceptional staff development opportunities, growing ambulatory care through non-resident medical centres, and transforming the four off-campus hospitals into high-quality general hospitals.

During his earlier tenure at AKUH, Mr Sohail spearheaded several institutional achievements. He successfully led the commissioning of the Ibn-e-Zuhr Building for Oncology Services and established the hospital's Radiation Therapy Services. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in securing the institution's first Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and oversaw the introduction of advanced imaging technologies.

With more than three decades of experience in healthcare management, Mr Sohail has held several prominent executive positions within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), including serving as Chief Executive Officer of the Aga Khan Hospitals in Kisumu and Mombasa, Kenya, and Regional Chief Executive Officer for Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) in Central Asia. 

Mr Sohail earned his Master of Business Administration from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Karachi. He also holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi.

A committed advocate for patient welfare, Mr Sohail serves as an Executive Committee Member of the Patients's Behbud Society for AKUH. In this capacity, he actively supports the society's mission to improve access to life-saving healthcare for patients in financial need.
