Campaign

It is estimated that every year, 40,000 women die of breast cancer in Pakistan. However, it has been proven that early detection of the disease can save lives. In 2017, The Aga Khan University Hospital’s “Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer Together” campaign focused on raising awareness among both men and women about the importance of early screening in the fight against breast cancer.

Campaign Highlights

• The month-long campaign introduced several firsts, including free employee breast examination sessions for all AKU female employees above the age of 40 or those with risk factors for the disease. These sessions were conducted by the hospital’s own breast surgeons, who voluntarily contributed their time for this cause.

• A highly successful Facebook Live session was also conducted, featuring a family medicine physician, a radiologist, a breast surgeon, and an oncologist. The session allowed the audience to ask questions about breast cancer in real time. The video was shared 96 times and reached more than 29,600 people.

• Awareness talks were held in Karachi and Hyderabad to spread information about early screening and breast cancer prevention.

• An online quiz was introduced to engage the audience and test their knowledge about breast cancer.

• Pink Giving Fridays encouraged staff to wear pink and contribute every Friday to support the cause.

• Several awareness videos were shared to educate the public about early detection and treatment.

• Discounted screening mammograms were offered to encourage more people to get screened.

• Free vouchers for gifts and screening mammograms were distributed, generously supported by sponsors.

• The campaign concluded with a Pink Walk, attended by over 400 men, women, and children who gathered to support the cause of breast cancer awareness.
