Hepatitis C is a silent disease, which means that people usually do not have symptoms and often do not know they are infected until their liver starts getting damaged, leading to conditions such as cirrhosis or liver cancer. However, the disease is completely treatable if it is diagnosed in the early stages. Highly effective medicines are available in Pakistan, but many patients remain unaware of the infection until it is too late. Effective screening can help eliminate the disease completely.

Pakistan has the highest burden of Hepatitis C globally, with nearly 8 million people affected. In 2016, the World Health Assembly pledged to eliminate Hepatitis C by 2030. To achieve this target, around 90% of infected individuals must be diagnosed and given access to treatment.

The Aga Khan University Hospital, guided by its principles of Impact, Quality, Relevance, and Access, has launched a programme for the elimination of Hepatitis C. This initiative is implemented through AKUH’s network of Outreach Medical Centres with the support of partners including Getz Pharma, Roche Diagnostics, Patient Behbud Society for AKUH, and the AKUH Patient Welfare Programme. The goal is to provide free-of-cost treatment to 12,000 patients who otherwise cannot afford care. Such collaborations are key to eliminating Hepatitis C from the country.

Under the Hepatitis C Elimination Programme, the Aga Khan University Hospital offers:

• Free rapid test screening for Hepatitis C at select medical centres

• Complete treatment for patients who test positive, supported by generous partners

• Discounted screening and diagnostic packages through AKUH Outreach Health Network across 291 lab locations in 126 cities of Pakistan

• Treatment packages available at Outreach Medical Centres across the country
