Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
Book AppointmentAnkylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory type of arthritis that mainly affects the spine and the joints connecting the spine to the pelvis (sacroiliac joints). It can also affect other joints, such as the hips, shoulders, and knees.
The condition causes pain and stiffness, particularly in the lower back and buttocks. Symptoms are usually worse in the morning or after periods of rest and improve with movement or exercise.
Over time, ongoing inflammation may lead to reduced flexibility, permanent changes in posture and, in some people, fusion of the bones of the spine. Early diagnosis and treatment can help control inflammation, reduce pain, and maintain mobility.
