Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is a common viral infection, commonly caused by the virus coxsackievirus. It can cause painful sores in the mouth and a rash or small blisters on the hands and feet. Sores may also appear on the buttocks. While these symptoms can cause discomfort or pain, they usually resolve within a week.

The infection mostly affects young children under age 5, but older children and adults can catch it too. It is usually spread by coughing and sneezing. You or your child may contract it through particles in the air or through infected stool. The virus can be easily transferred when changing diapers or when the child touches their stool and then touches other objects around them.

When to seek expert advice

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common and mild illness and usually subsides in five to six days. However, you can still consult a doctor at the Department of Paediatrics if your child refuses to eat and take fluids because of the painful blisters.

If the symptoms do not go away in five to six days or worsen, contact your doctor immediately.
