Lichen Planus
Book AppointmentLichen planus is an inflammatory condition that affects the skin and mucous membranes, causing itchy, purple-coloured, flat-topped bumps on the skin. It can also affect the inside of the mouth, nails, scalp, and, less commonly, the genital area.
Lichen planus is thought to be an autoimmune condition, in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin or mucous membrane cells. Although the exact cause is unknown, it has been associated with certain viral infections, such as hepatitis C, certain medications, and, in some cases, allergic reactions.
Lichen planus affects less than 1% of the population and is most common in adults between the ages of 30 and 60.
