Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Book AppointmentSystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus, is a long-term (chronic) autoimmune disease. In lupus, the body's immune system, which normally protects against infection, mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs.
Lupus can affect many parts of the body, including the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, heart, and lungs. The condition affects each person differently. Some people have mild disease affecting only the skin or joints, while others may develop more serious complications involving internal organs.
Lupus often follows a pattern of flares (periods when symptoms worsen) and remission (periods when symptoms improve). Although there is no cure, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help control symptoms and prevent long-term organ damage.
