AKUH Inaugurates New Dialysis Facility to Cater to Growing Demand

A new Hemodialysis unit was inaugurated today at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). The new location consists of 4 additional dialysis stations for outpatient services and is available for both pediatric and adult patients.

This is the third dialysis unit at AKUH. With this addition, the Hospital now has 14 stations and will be able to perform 10-12 additional procedures a day and to take on more than 20 additional patients in the existing program. 

According to Dr. Nuzhat Faruqui, Service Line Chief, Kidney and Bladder, it was a necessary change. The old facilities no longer had the capacity to meet the needs of the growing number of patients in need of dialysis. 

The inauguration of the hemodialysis unit was led by Hans Kedzierski, CEO, The Aga Khan University Hospital, who 

congratulated the Kidney and Bladder Service Line with this great achievement and thanked them for their perseverance in making this possible. 

The CEO spoke about the growing demand for dialysis services and the Hospital’s plans to expand these services. 

Kidney disease is prevalent in Pakistan, causing 20,000 deaths a year and the presence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is rapidly growing in our country. CKD can be caused by malnutrition, low water intake and excessive use of medicine. It is also common amongst people suffering from diabetes, obesity and hypertension. 

AKUH hopes that with this additional hemodialysis unit and the kidney transplant program that started in 2017, they will now be able to serve the increasing number of patients who need care for the nephrological diseases.
