Hand Hygiene Day Celebrations at Secondary Hospitals

Hand Hygiene day is globally celebrated on 5th May. WHO theme for hand hygiene day 2018 was "It's in your hands – prevent sepsis in health care setting". The health facilities have been advised by WHO to prevent health care-associated infections through hand hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC) action. Sepsis is estimated to affect more than 30 million patients every year worldwide.

Infection Prevention and Control Committee of The Aga Khan Maternal and Child Care Centre (AKMCCC), Hyderabad, The Aga Khan Hospital for Women, Karimabad and The Aga Khan Hospital for Women and Children, Kharadar​ celebrated Hand Hygiene day in full swing.

It was celebrated with great passion by the staff, in-patient and outpatients. We engaged patients and attendants in the celebration and aware then about importance of Hand hygiene.

Different activities were performed during the day, the Hand Hygiene videos were played to educate people about Hand Hygiene. It was followed by demonstration of hand hygiene steps by our team, who made the audience practice it as well. At the end quiz was conducted about the hand hygiene and giveaways were given to the winners. Later on Infection Control team visited the patients and families and distributed gifts to the winners of the quiz.

The event was organized to improve Hand Hygiene compliance among health care professionals and reduce health care associated infections and also focused on involving patients and families in Hand Hygiene practices to prevent from infections.

The key message of the event was to communicate an emphasis on the "5 moments of hand hygiene" must be followed by everyone. All health care professionals, patients and families participated actively in Hand Hygiene day celebration.
