Department of Anaesthesiology
The Department of Anaesthesiology at The Aga Khan University Hospital provides perioperative anaesthesia, critical care support, and pain management services across surgical and procedural disciplines.
Anaesthesia teams are responsible for preoperative assessment, intraoperative monitoring, postoperative recovery, and patient safety throughout the surgical journey. Services support all major and minor surgical procedures, day care surgeries, and specialised interventions across the hospital. Anaesthesiologists also contribute to the care of critically ill patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).
The Department offers structured acute and chronic pain management services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Pain services address a wide range of conditions, including post-surgical pain, cancer-related pain, neuropathic and musculoskeletal pain disorders, and other complex pain syndromes. Interventional pain procedures are provided where clinically indicated as part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach.
A dedicated Pre-Operative Anaesthesia Clinic evaluates and optimises patients prior to surgery, ensuring appropriate risk assessment, medical stabilisation, and individualised anaesthetic planning. This structured pathway strengthens patient safety and enhances surgical outcomes.
The Department works closely with surgical teams, critical care specialists, internal medicine, oncology, and rehabilitation services to ensure coordinated perioperative and pain care delivery.
As part of a quaternary-care academic medical centre, the Department contributes to postgraduate training, simulation-based education, clinical governance, and research in perioperative medicine and pain management.
