Department of Emergency Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine at The Aga Khan University Hospital provides 24-hour, seven-day emergency care for patients of all ages presenting with acute medical and surgical conditions.
Services include adult and paediatric emergency care, with a dedicated Paediatric Emergency Unit and a specialised Cardiac Emergency Bay equipped to manage acute coronary syndromes and other cardiac emergencies.
The Department operates on a structured triage system, ensuring immediate assessment of all patients upon arrival. Cases are categorised by clinical urgency, enabling rapid identification and prioritisation of life- or limb-threatening conditions while maintaining timely care for non-urgent presentations.
The main Emergency Department is located at the Hospital’s Main Campus on Stadium Road in Karachi. A Satellite Emergency Department operates at Clifton Medical Services, extending emergency access within the city. Urgent Care Services are available at the Main Campus and all Off-Campus Hospitals for conditions requiring prompt medical attention that do not necessitate full emergency-level care.
Care is delivered by emergency medicine consultants and supervised clinical teams trained in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Continuous training and adherence to established emergency protocols ensure consistent standards of safety and responsiveness.
Close coordination with cardiology, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, critical care, radiology and other specialties enables seamless transition to definitive care when hospital admission or specialist intervention is required.
As part of a quaternary-care academic medical centre, the Department contributes to emergency medicine training and clinical governance initiatives aimed at strengthening acute care systems.
