The Section of Infectious Diseases at The Aga Khan University Hospital provides specialised care for infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Services include the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of both common and complex infectious diseases.
The Section manages a broad spectrum of conditions, including tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, viral hepatitis, HIV, emerging viral infections, and healthcare-associated infections. It also plays a key role in the management of patients with severe or complicated infections requiring multidisciplinary inpatient care.
Clinical services are closely integrated with microbiology, pathology, infection prevention and control, and critical care teams. The Section contributes to antimicrobial stewardship initiatives, supporting the responsible use of antibiotics and helping address the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
As part of a quaternary-care academic medical centre, the Section is actively involved in clinical research, public health initiatives, and postgraduate education, ensuring that patient care is aligned with current evidence and global standards.
