Saving Children with Inborn Errors of ​Metabolism​

Vomiting. Lethargy. Coma. Liver Failure. Death

This is the progression of a child born with an Inborn Error of Metabolism (IEM). IEMs are a group of rare inherited genetic disorders that prevent the body from turning food into energy, leading to developmental delays and medical problems. Children born with IEMs suffer from typical symptoms including lethargy, poor feeding, apnea or tachypnea, and recurrent vomiting. However, if these disorders are not treated in time, they can also lead to death. Multiple studies have confirmed the high prevalence of IEMs in Pakistan due to the high rate of inter-marriages and large family sizes in Pakistan. 

The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is the only hospital in Pakistan with trained and qualified metabolic physicians to look after the unique challenges of patients with IEM, and to offer diagnostic testing services for treatable IEMs. 

In order to survive and lead a normal healthy life, children with IEM need a lifelong intake of special food supplements. In line with AKUH's mission to save these children, we joined hands with Nutricia to provide these essential and life-saving food supplements to children with IEM at subsidized rates. Nutricia is part of the Danone group which specializes in clinical nutrition products.

Almost two-thirds of the patients diagnosed with IEM are unable to pay for these supplements and require financial assistance. Be part of this noble cause and help support such children.
