Life took an unexpected turn for Ayan when he was just 12. At an age when most children are focused on school and playing, Ayan began experiencing a persistent pain in his knee. Initially, there were no alarming symptoms, just a stubborn ache that refused to go away.
As the weeks passed, the pain escalated, becoming increasingly severe and accompanied by noticeable swelling. Concerned, his family took him to a doctor, who recommended an MRI to find the root cause of the knee pain. The results brought life-altering news: Ayan was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.
The medical team outlined a daunting treatment plan. The cancer meant that the affected bone, stretching from his femur down, had to be surgically removed and replaced with a titanium implant.
Ayan’s grueling battle began with chemotherapy. Soon after, his doctors determined they could not delay the surgical procedure any longer. Despite the immense physical and emotional toll, the young boy underwent the complex surgery, which was happily a complete success.
A crucial part of Ayan's recovery was the compassionate care provided by his Paediatric Oncologist at AKUH, Dr Sadaf Altaf. His family found immense comfort in her transparent and clear communication, always keeping them informed and staying in close contact throughout the overwhelming process.
Now, at 14 years old, Ayan has completed his primary treatment and is relieved from his battle with cancer. While his hardest days are behind him, his healthcare journey continues. Because cancer treatments carry long-term impacts, Ayan diligently returns to the hospital every four to five months for routine follow-ups and monitoring.
Through the unrelenting support of his parents and the dedication of his medical team, Ayan is now doing well—a testament to his incredible resilience and bravery.
