For the Chhapra family, diabetes is not a tragedy; it is simply a chapter in a much larger story of resilience, love, and growth.
The family’s relationship with diabetes began early and abruptly when their son Habib was diagnosed at just a year and a half old. Before he could even form his first memories, managing his health was already a daily routine for his family.
But life had another test in store. Years later, when Habib’s sister Ayesha was ten, the family was struck by a second blow. Her sudden diagnosis felt like a bomb dropping, culminating in a panicked rush to the emergency room at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), where doctors discovered her blood sugar levels had dangerously spiked.
For a ten-year-old, the diagnosis was a heavy burden. Ayesha's first major hurdle was simply looking the illness in the eye; accepting that this was now a permanent part of her life. Navigating the challenges of moving to a new school while simultaneously managing a chronic condition was daunting. Yet, Ayesha didn't let the illness define her. Over time, the daily discipline of monitoring her health forged a deep inner resilience.
Habib, having grown up with diabetes from infancy, views it not as a hindrance, but as a condition to manage. He attributes his confidence to his unwavering support system: his parents, his siblings, and his medical team.
A crucial pillar of Habib's support came from Dr Abdul Ghaffar Billoo, Consultant Paediatrician at AKUH. To Habib, Dr Billoo was far more than a physician – he affectionately calls him ‘Nana Billoo’ (Grandfather Billoo). Dr Billoo didn't just write prescriptions; he guided Habib through the complex maze of diets and medications, offering a paternal wisdom that helped shape Habib into the man he is today.
Together, Ayesha and Habib stand as testaments to the power of a positive mindset. Their journey carries a message: with the right care and a strong support system in your corner, it is entirely possible to live a happy and incredibly fulfilling life, even with a diabetes diagnosis.
