Pre-Conception Counselling
Overview
Every pregnancy begins before a positive pregnancy test. If you have a medical condition or have experienced problems in a previous pregnancy, planning ahead can make a significant difference to your health and your baby's well-being.
At AKUH, our Pre-Conception Counselling services help women prepare for pregnancy by identifying possible risks, improving their health before conception, and creating a personalised pregnancy plan. Our goal is to help you achieve the safest possible pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Who should consider pre-conception counselling?
We recommend visiting this clinic if you are planning a pregnancy and have any of the following:
Lifestyle factors: Advanced maternal age (35 or older), Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS), excess weight/obesity, or a history of bariatric surgery.
Chronic medical conditions: Including diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, epilepsy, stroke, or conditions affecting the heart, thyroid, kidney, or liver (such as hepatitis).
Immune and blood disorders: Autoimmune diseases (like SLE or rheumatoid arthritis), antiphospholipid syndrome, thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, or HIV.
Previous pregnancy complications: A history of miscarriages, stillbirth, premature birth, pre-eclampsia, or having a baby with a birth defect.
Medications and medical history: Taking long-term prescriptions (such as blood thinners or acne medications), a history of cancer/chemotherapy, or managing mental health conditions.
Genetic considerations: Being married to a close relative (consanguineous marriage).
