Overview
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterised by gradual damage to the optic nerve usually caused by fluid buildup in the front part of your eye. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to vision loss or blindness. SLT is primarily used to treat open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of the disease but is also used for different types of glaucoma and related conditions:
Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG): The most prevalent type, characterised by gradual damage to the optic nerve.
Ocular hypertension: Elevated IOP without detectable optic nerve damage. SLT can be used to prevent the development of glaucoma in these cases.
Normal-tension glaucoma: Optic nerve damage despite having normal IOP readings. SLT may still be beneficial in lowering IOP further.
Pseudoexfoliation glaucoma: A secondary form of open-angle glaucoma associated with the buildup of flaky material in the eye.
Pigmentary glaucoma: Another secondary form caused by the dispersion of pigment granules that clog the drainage system.
