Aga Khan University Hospital Family Medicine Centre based on international best practice



<p class="MsoNormal"></p><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;">The Family Medicine Centre (FMC) at the Aga Khan University Hospital provides care for patients and their families at standard affordable fees based on international best practice. The Centre treats both patients with appointments and those who walk in for treatment feeling unwell, but not  necessarily ill to report to the accident and emergency unit.</span><br style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;"/><br style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;"/><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;">Dr Linda Thorpe,  Head of the facility, while outlining the role of family medicine said, “We endeavour to care for the entire family by giving them treatment when they are sick and ensure they remain healthy. Our regular patients make appointments with their preferred doctors who provide continuous care with personalised attention.” “Family physicians have expert knowledge in a wide range of common problems faced by patients of all ages in the community. These doctors are trained to treat acute illnesses such as infections and malaria. They are also able to provide continuous care for chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, arthritis and emotional problems.”</span><br style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;"/><br style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;"/><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;">She further noted, “We concentrate on the prevention of illness and the maintenance of good health. Our regular patients benefit from well-bonded continuous treatment by the doctor of their choice. Annual medical check-ups are also done at the FMC for cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and cancer to help prevent sickness. We also carry out medical screening for schools and employees in both public and private organisations.”</span><br style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;"/><br style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;"/><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;">Lawrence Kinyanjui,  Unit Coordinator, responsible for bookings and reports added, “We have six doctors in the unit and three of them are on duty at any one time to look after patients. Treatment is provided to an average of 70 patients each day.”“Our opening hours are 9:00 a.m to 5:00 a.m from Monday to Friday. All our patients including both appointments and walk ins are attended to at the earliest time possible.” “We are located close to both the hospital’s laboratory and pharmacy. When needed, we are able to arrange for quick referrals to the appropriate specialists, a service greatly appreciated by our patients.” He concluded.</span><br style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: helvetica;"/>
