​​Paediatric and Child Health Facilities

At Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, our recently renovated in-patient Children's Ward is the focal point for high-quality, personalized medical services for children who require round-the-clock care.

The Children's Ward is designed for children up to 15 years, or up to 18 years if specialty paediatric follow-up care is required. This spacious in-patient wing has both general ward beds and private rooms, each of which opens out onto the lush Watoto Garden play area. Resident doctors and nurses staff the ward 24 hours a day, and a paediatric consultant is always on-call.

We also know that having loved ones close by is central to your child's recovery. In order to ensure that you and your family members are able to continuously provide the support and comfort your child needs, the Children's Ward also provides beds for parents or guardians who wish to remain overnight.

The services provided in the Children's Ward include:

  • 24 hour nursing care
  • 24 hour on-call ward doctor
  • Daily visits by a team of house officers, peadiatricians and specialists as required
In the Paediatric High Dependency Unit, doctors and nurses with extensive compassionately care for children with conditions that need to be closely monitored.
Critically ill children need to be closely supervised by specialist physicians to ensure a smooth recovery. The Paediatric Intensive Care Units at AKUH,N give these children access to both the highest quality paediatric care and the specialised facilities required for recovery.
Paediatric dentistry plays a vital role in instilling in the child a positive attitude towards good oral health.
Preventive and curative dental services are available at the Dental Suite situated on the second  floor of the East Tower Building.

We operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make sure that children requiring emergency medical attention have immediate access to specialised treatment.

You child will be cared for by our dedicated team of on-call paediatric physicians and nurses, each of whom is specially trained to meet the complex medical needs of injured and seriously ill children.

The Paediatric Casualty Unit ​is also adjacent to the Children's Ward, in order to facilitate rapid and convenient transfers​.

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi has been awarded a UNICEF certificate that designates us as a baby-friendly hospital. From your baby's first breath, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is there to provide both of you with premiere medical care. Our doctors and nurses are experts in neonatal care.

We believe it is important for you and your baby to spend as much time together as possible, beginning with your stay at the hospital. In order to facilitate this, all babies who are delivered without complications room-in with their mothers. New Born Unit/Nursery
This unit is designed for healthy newborns who require no or minimal interventions. Whenever a baby is not rooming-in with his mother, the experienced staff in our nursery is there to provide him with compassionate, expert care.

Neonatal High Dependency Unit
In the Neonatal High Dependency Unit, newborns who require specialised medical attention receive round-the-clock observation and care.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is home to the first and only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the East and Central African region. In this Unit, we provide specialised care of the highest international standard to newborns requiring close monitoring and high level of interventions. The Paediatric Allergy Clinic is run by a Paediatric Allergollogist.  The clinic offers integrated management of the different allergic conditions present in an affected child. Allergy testing either in the patients’ blood or skin is available and is guided by the clinical condition and the likely causative factor identified in the clinical history. Allergy education is a vital part of the consultation as most allergies are chronic and avoidance of identified triggers and proper use of medications is the mainstay of  management .

Paediatric rheumatology is a sub-specialty that focusses on diagnoses and treatment of newborns through to 18 year old teenage children with autoimmune disorders, including Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, lupus, myositis, scleroderma, psoriasis, Behcet’s disease, and various vasculitides such as Kawasaki disease as well as non-specifc pain of the muscles or bones among others.

The pediatric cardiology department at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUHN), is a unit that is geared towards establishing itself to provide tertiary level of care for children with complex congenital and acquired heart diseases within the region and beyond.  The section of pediatric cardiology provides high quality, evidence-based care to children suffering from cardiovascular pathology, both congenital and acquired and follow a multi-displinary approach in taking care of patients as well as their families. 

Our out-patient services run daily. Concomitant to both the inpatient and outpatient services, pediatric cardiology at AKUHN is set to embrace all kinds of subspecialities and services within the cardiac field including cardiac imaging, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and surgery which are all vital in the management of pediatric cardiovascular diseases. ​

This services offers diagnostic and therapeutic services for all disorders related to the digestive system, liver and biliary system as well as nutritional disorders. This is done through outpatient clinics, inpatient management, endoscopic services and radiology for ultrasound guided biopsies. 
 
The service is currently run by three paediatric gastroenterologists. 
 
We liase with doctors abroad on cases that cannot be managed locally for like liver transplants so that we can prepare the patients prior to surgery as well as manage them once they are back. This provides seamless transition of care to the patients. 
  
Clinics are run daily from Monday to Friday at the Paediatric Specialist Clinics and Paediatric Consulting Clinics. Elective endoscopies are done on Wednesdays and Fridays, while emergency endoscopies can be done at any time.

We diagnose and treat children with blood disorders and cancers. The hospital has two specialists who run daily cancer clinics based on appointments. The clinic is based at the hospital Outpatient Cancer Clinic Unit which is fully equipped to provide ambulatory chemotherapy treatment services. Children with non-cancerous blood diseases like anaemia and bleeding disorders are seen on Fridays on appointment only. 

Emergency cases are channelled through Paediatrics Accident and Emergency Department from where the specialist is informed accordingly. Inpatients are managed in the Children’s Ward which has provisions for private and general ward beds as well as Paediatric High Dependency Unit support. Care may be escalated  to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or main Intensive Care Unit depending on age.

We attend to newborn infants (preterm, term and those with congenital concerns) born at Aga Khan University Hospital or referred for our services after birth at other regional centres. The hospital has two full-time neonatologists who oversee every delivery.  Infants requiring Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions are also primarily managed by the full-time faculty neonatologists. The NICU has the ability to manage extremely low birth weight infants, provide for clinical support and care for patients requiring sub-specialty and post-surgical management. We provide follow up care for the NICU admissions at our ambulatory outpatient neonatal clinic on a weekly basis, in addition to private clinics that are run per provider preferences by appointment only. The clinic is based at the hospital Outpatient Specialty Clinic Unit which is fully equipped to provide growth monitoring, immunization services and the capability of providing and addressing issues of non-emergent concerns. 

Emergency cases are chann led through the Paediatric Casualty department where the neonatologist is informed accordingly for further consultation and management. Inpatients are managed in the Neonatal High Dependency Unit or Children’s Ward which has provisions for private and general ward beds. Care may be escalated to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Paediatric Intensive Care Unit depending on age and clinical condition.

This is a service designed to cater for neonates, children and adolescents with problems arising from the nervous system some of which may be as a result of birth defects, problems related to child delivery as well as consequences of infections or trauma on the nervous system. We also review children with intellectual disability or developmental delays to provide an understanding of possible causes as well as measures that can be taken to help the child achieve their best potential while reducing advancement of possible complications. We run three clinics a week including; 

  • Tuesdays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
  • Fridays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

Neurology patient rounds are conducted daily for those who need inpatient service. At Aga Khan University hospital, Nairobi, we work closely with practitioners in rehabilitation including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, educational psychologists, nutritionists and clinical psychologists to provide a wholesome interventional program for our patients. Diagnostic services essential to child neurology practice including MRI, PET CT Scan, EEG and neurophysiology tests are also available on site.
