The specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery deals with diverse diseases and conditions that manifest in the oral cavity soft tissues and the facial skeleton including the jaw bones and other facial bones.

Inpatient surgical services

AKUH, N is one of the most highly regarded neurosurgical facilities in East, Central and Southern Africa. The Neurosurgery Section is led by three specialists who have earned fellowships in neurological surgery from the Royal College(RCS) and the South African Colleges of Surgeons.

Under their guidance, our team provides a wide range of paediatric and adult neurosurgical services to diagnose and treat conditions that affect all aspects of the nervous system, including the brain and spine.

We offer the following services;

  • Cerebrovascular and endovascular therapy for complex brain disorders
  • Neuro-endoscopic surgery for cranial and skull base lesions and complex spine therapies.
  • We also offer a robust neuro-critical care service including invasive neuromonitoring for traumatic brain injury.

We are a regional referral centre and training site and part of full surgical academic department. It is anticipated in the near term the department will develop and implement an MMed-Neurosurgery training programme.

Our ENT Unit offers both routine and emergency consultations for conditions related to ear, nose, throat, head and neck.

These run Monday to Saturday by appointment.

Outpatient procedures such as Aural toilet, Naso-pharyngo-laryngoscopy, foreign body removal, nasal cautery amongst others are done

Emergency Services

We always have an ENT surgeon on call to attend to emergent or urgent conditions via our A& E department

Our inpatient and surgical services include all routine consultations and both routine and specialized operations in the following areas:

  • Otology- e.g. Myringotomy and Grommet insertion, tympanoplasty, stapedotomy and mastoidectomy
  • Rhinology- e.g. septoplasty, Endoscopic sinus surgery, adeno-tonsillectomy
  • Laryngology- e.g. micro-laryngeal surgery,
  • Head and neck surgery- e.g. congenital and acquired head and neck tumours
  • Audio logical services are available including hearing tests and hearing aid fitting.

We have three experienced faculty members, one of whom is a head neck surgery sub-specialist, the other two are amongst the 3 surgeons who perform Cochlear Implantation in Kenya.

We also work in collaboration with other AKUH, N departments, such as the Speech therapy under Physiotherapy to ensure that you receive the best in team-based comprehensive care.​ 

We offer both out-patient services and in-patient services. We have a dedicated team of senior Specialist Ophthalmologists, nursing staff, administrative staff and support staff. We ensure that all our patients receive the right diagnosis and the best treatment.

Outpatient Clinic

Our Out-patient services work on all days except Sundays and festival holidays. 

24 hours' emergency services function on all days.

There is a line for booking prior to consultation however emergency cases or painful eyes conditions are seen as walk in patients.

Majority of the patients are diagnosed and treated as outpatients. Patients who requires special procedures or surgeries, are advised of the facilities available.

We have various subspecialties: cataract, cornea, glaucoma, squint and paediatric ophthalmology, Vitreo retina and Laser, uvea, orbit & oculoplasty, Corneal graft, and refractive surgery.

We do the latest type of cataract surgery, Phaco emulsification commonly known by people as Laser cataract surgery

Different type of retinal detachment surgery is now performed with very skill surgeons, also surgery on children with eye deviation and surgery for patients with glaucoma not responding to eye drops.

We also have a Spectacles/glasses service with a very good optical workshop and different types of beautiful frames.

Inpatient Services

AKUH offers state-of-the-art facilities; modern operation theatres are well equipped with trained dedicated personnel. Our in-patient facilities include private executive rooms and general wards. Trained ophthalmic nursing assistants provide twenty-four-hour nursing care.

Our orthopaedic surgeons collaborate closely with the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Radiology and other departments to provide you with comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

AKUH,N paediatric surgeons specialize specifically in caring for the surgical needs of children of all ages. Treating infants and children requires particular skills, and our medical specialists are specifically trained to involve your family in your child's treatment and ensure that treatment is comprehensive.

Our Plastic Surgery Unit is primarily responsible for providing exemplarily care for burn patients at AKUH,N but also offers a wide range of modern plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures.

Our services include:

  • Breast reconstruction, augmentation and reduction
  • Ear and other soft tissue injury treatment or loss reconstruction
  • Facelift
  • Fat grafting/injection
  • Finger-tip injuries (V-Y reconstruction)
  • Lip reconstruction
  • Major, medium and minor liposuction
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Skin grafts, both major and complex
  • Tendon or nerve repair​

This specialty deals with the diseases that affect the kidney, urethra, bladder and the male reproductive organs comprising the testes, penis, urethra and prostate.

Patients with urological problems can be attended to in various wards depending on the urgency of their complaints.

Patients with sudden onset of painful complaints can be seen at the Accident and Emergency Department and the consultant on call can be alerted for review.

The surgical outpatient clinics ran on a daily basis and non-urgent patients may book an appointment to see the consultant urologist.

Daily consultant round services for inpatient setting is in place.

The urology service offers state-of-the-art surgical procedures for treatment of urological cancers, endoscopic procedures for urinary stones, benign prostate disease and urethral strictures.

Andrology services for erectile dysfunction and male factors in fertility are also offered.​
