AKUH,N recommends that all women have regular Pap smear screening in order to detect pre-cancerous changes in the cervix. Should your gynaecologist detect any abnormalities in your Pap smear , colposcopy may be recommended. We also provide HPV vaccinatin, ovarian screening using a combination of a blood tests and ultrasound scans and ‘Pipelle’ endometrial sampling for the detection of endometrial cancer. Uterine fibroids are extremely common causes of menstrual problems, pressure symptoms and difficulties with fertility.  AKUH,N offers several options for the treatment of fibroids. We provide 'traditional' surgery in the form of  myomectomy or hysterectomy. We also perform less invasive laparoscopic or hysteroscopic myomectomy. Further, we are the premier institution in Africa offering Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE) carried out in collaboration with the Radiology Department, UFE is a modern, non-surgical method of treating fibroids that allows for rapid recovery.
Our gynaecologists offer the highest quality open, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery and will advise you on the best procedure to address your condition. For women who desire a permanent method of family planning, we also provide laparoscopic clip sterilization. Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery offer a more rapid recovery and lower cost compared to open operations, as they are frequently undertaken on a ‘day care’ basis. More extensive procedures require a longer stay, for which accommodation is available in the Surgical Ward, Private Wing or Princess Zahra Pavilion.
Patients are often hesitant to seek advice about bladder issues, such as an urge to pass urine too frequently or leaking. However, these problems are very common and can often be solved by relatively simple measures including clearing infections, taking tablets to reduce over-sensitivity of the bladder or participating in physiotherapy. There are also some conditions, such as stress urinary incontinence and prolapse, which may be treated through surgery. If you are experiencing bladder problems, please book an appointment with one of our specialists who can diagnose and treat your condition. We also offer a specialist service for fistula patients whose problem may have arisen as a result of childbirth, after surgery or after radiotherapy.
