Maternity Services

At Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, our approach to maternity care is grounded in respect for individual and cultural choices in childbirth, supported by the availability of world-class care and facilities. Our goal to provide optimal comfort and safety for both mother and child during the birthing process. We also know how important it is for expectant mothers to have the support and presence of relatives during this time, and so the involvement of family members is strongly encouraged.

The Jimmy Sayani Building Maternity Unit

This purpose built Maternity Unit offers seven ensuite labour and delivery private rooms equipped with flexible delivery beds and facilities for monitoring the condition of mother and baby. One room has a built in Birthing Pool should you wish to try a water birth! The unit also has special monitoring equipment for mothers with medical complications such as pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure). After the birth, accommodation options include four bedded shared bays each with a bathroom, two bed (duplex) rooms with bathrooms and private ensuite rooms. Another option for your postnatal stay is the Princess Zahra Pavilion where the Maternity Unit midwives will attend to you and your baby along with your obstetrician and paediatrician.

Our team of maternity care specialists-including midwives, nurses, obstetricians, paediatricians and anaesthetists-is committed to offering comprehensive medical support for you and your family, from conception through to delivery.

We have opted for a midwifery-obstetrician team model of care whereby a consultant obstetrician gynaecologist is available on campus at any given time of day and night, assisted by a team of other professionals to attend to emergency pregnancy conditions in order to save lives and assure safe deliveries.
