Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA)

The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi is the first and only hospital in Pakistan to be awarded the prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation as an academic medical centre, establishing our healthcare standards as being of world-class quality. JCI is an international accrediting body that audits hospitals against 'standards that are challenging, achievable, and focused on the safety and quality of patient care'.

As quoted by the accrediting body, “JCI accreditation is considered the gold standard in global health care. JCI consultants are the most skilled and experienced in the industry".

The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi was first accredited by JCI in 2006, and has successfully maintained the accreditation since then; in 2015 it became JCI accredited as an academic medical centre.


College of American Pathologists (CAP) Accreditation

The AKUH Clinical Laboratories are the first laboratories in Pakistan to have achieved the CAP accreditation, verifying that our Clinical Laboratories as a provider of World Class Quality Testing. This accreditation certifies that the AKUH Clinical Laboratories are adhering to international standards which are necessary for fast and accurate results which are integral to patient safety, correct diagnosis and early treatment.

With this latest accreditation round, the list of Aga Khan University Hospital's Labs that are accredited includes the AKUH Main Campus Lab - Karachi, Clifton Medical Services (CMS) Lab - Karachi, Lahore Lab, Rawalpindi Lab, Peshawar Lab, Faisalabad Lab, Multan Lab, Hyderabad Lab and Sukkur Lab.

The AKUH Clinical Laboratories first became CAP-accredited in 2017, and have successfully maintained the accreditation through each subsequent CAP-audit.

SafeCare Level 5 Certification

The AKUH's four off-campus hospitals in Pakistan, Aga Khan Hospitals, Garden, Karimabad, Kharadar and Hyderabad, all became SafeCare Level-5 certified in 2022-2023. SafeCare is a renowned international certification that provides a rigorous framework for assessing and enhancing healthcare quality in low- and middle-income countries. Achieving SafeCare ​Level 5 certification is a remarkable feat, achievable only by institutions that consistently demonstrate high-quality standards across the full spectrum of SafeCare Service Elements. This certification signifies that our hospitals have consistently upheld exceptional standards across various aspects of patient care, safety, and overall healthcare service delivery. Moreover, it reflects our commitment to not merely meeting but surpassing stringent benchmarks.


Sindh Healthcare Commission License

​​The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) was awarded the prestigious Sindh Health Care Commission (SHCC) license in 2022, as a testament to the quality and continuous improvement in the standard of care we provide to our patients.

The license was awarded in recognition of AKUH's compliance with stringent quality standards set by the provincial healthcare commission, based on a thorough understanding of the intricacies of the local healthcare landscape.

In 2024, the prestigious SHCC license was also awarded to the Aga Khan Hospital, Karimabad, and the Aga Khan Hospital, Garden.
