Patient Support Groups

The Aga Khan University Hospital has a number of patient support groups facilitated by our nurses and doctors to help patients and their families cope with the emotional and physical aspects of a disease. Support groups bring people facing similar situations together to help them learn more about dealing with their challenge and what others are going through, as well as gain courage and support in the knowledge that they are not alone in their struggle. Patient support groups are volunteer-run.

Children’s Cancer (Paediatric Oncology) Support Group, facilitated by Children’s Oncology services, is for parents whose children are undergoing cancer treatment. Spearheaded by parents of former cancer patients, the support group meets on a quarterly basis, to lend guidance to others in coping with the disease and providing comfort. The discussions revolve around nutritional requirements of the patients, psychological counselling for the family members, physiotherapy services and other related topics. Access to the support group is by invitation.

The Head and Neck Cancer Support Group, in collaboration with ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat or Otolaryngology) and Oncology services, is a platform for Head and Neck cancer patients who get together periodically to talk about fighting and living with the disease. The group is made up of current or former patients who can share similar experiences and offer support to one another.  It is inspiring and encouraging for newly diagnosed patients to connect with long-term survivors of the disease. Patients and families come to share their experiences that help provide support during times of anxiety and fear. Group members can exchange contact numbers and can continue to support each other through this network. Patients receiving treatment for head and neck cancer at our hospital can attend.
