Vascular Access for Haemodialysis

Haemodialysis is a treatment that removes waste products and excess fluid from your blood when your kidneys can no longer do so effectively. This treatment involves filtering your blood through a machine outside your body.

To perform haemodialysis, a vascular access must be created. An access is a site from which blood can be extracted and then safely reintroduced into your body.

Conditions We Treat

  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) requiring haemodialysis.
  • Existing arteriovenous (AV) fistula or graft dysfunction.

Our Services

The AKUH Haemodialysis Access Programme is designed to help patients with chronic kidney disease prepare for haemodialysis in a timely and efficient manner. The service offers:

  • Skilled surgical expertise: AKUH's team of experienced vascular surgeons performs fistula and graft creation procedures.
  • Choice of access type: Depending on your individual needs, the programme can help you choose between a fistula (direct connection between an artery and vein) or a graft (a synthetic tube). Also, a long-term tunnelled dialysis catheter (Peram catheter) is placed by our experienced vascular surgeons.
  • Education and support: The programme provides patients and their families with information about haemodialysis access options, the creation process, and ongoing care.
  • Comprehensive follow-up care: The programme ensures proper monitoring and management of the created vascular access to optimise its function and longevity.
