Lymphedema Programme

The AKUH Lymphedema Programme is dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support for patients living with lymphedema. Lymphedema is a condition that causes swelling in a part of the body, usually the arms or legs, and can lead to loss of movement in the affected limb. It can be present at birth or occur after surgery, radiation therapy, or infection. Our programme offers a variety of services to help you manage your lymphedema and improve your quality of life while living with the condition.

Conditions We Treat

All stages of lymphedema, including:

  • Primary lymphedema: This is a less common form of lymphedema that is present at birth or develops later in life for no apparent reason.
  • Secondary lymphedema: This is the more common form of lymphedema and develops as a complication of surgery, radiation therapy, or infection.

Our Services

AKUH offers a comprehensive programme, known for its:

  • Comprehensive lymphedema therapy: This is a personalised treatment plan to help reduce lymphedema swelling. It may include:
    • Manual lymphatic drainage: This is a gentle massage technique that helps to move fluid out of the swollen area.
    • Compression bandaging: This involves applying special bandages to the affected area to help reduce swelling and prevent further fluid buildup.
    • Skin care education: This is important to help prevent infection, which can worsen lymphedema.
  • Surgical intervention: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to treat lymphedema. Our highly skilled surgeons perform innovative surgical treatments, such as microvascular lymph node transfer.
  • Patient education and support groups: We offer educational sessions and support groups to help patients learn more about lymphedema and connect with others who are living with the condition.
