Every newborn deserves the healthiest start possible. The AKUH Neonatology Programme is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for premature and critically ill newborns. Our team of highly skilled neonatologists, nurses, and other specialists works tirelessly to ensure each infant receives the best possible treatment and support.

Conditions We Treat

Our programme specialises in treating a wide array of conditions affecting newborns, including:

  • Extreme prematurity: Babies born as low as 24 weeks (500 grams) to 37 weeks gestational age.
  • Birth defects: Congenital heart disease, respiratory problems, and neurological conditions.  
  • Neonatal infections: Sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis and other congenital and acquired infections.  
  • Breathing difficulties: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).  
  • Neonatal surgical problems: Including congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), surgical chest problems, upper and lower GI obstruction, tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), etc.

Our Services

We offer a comprehensive range of services to diagnose and manage your newborn's condition, including:

  • Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU): 24-bed NICU equipped with state-of-the-art technology to provide life-saving care for the most critically ill newborns, including ventilators, medication, and specialised monitoring equipment.
  • NICU transport team: Transports babies to and from different hospitals both with and without ventilator.
  • Specialised care: We offer a range of advanced neonatal treatments, some of which include phototherapy, total body cooling therapy, ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement, peritoneal dialysis, as well as various forms of respiratory support, including invasive, non-invasive, and high frequency ventilation. 
  • Developmental care: Promoting healthy growth and development through positioning, kangaroo care, and sensory stimulation.
  • Family support: Offering counseling and guidance to parents throughout their baby's NICU stay.

Our Multidisciplinary Team

Our programme brings together a team of specialists for your newborn's complete care:

  • Neonatologists: Paediatricians with specialised training in caring for newborns.
  • Neonatal nurses: Specially trained to provide critical care for infants.
  • Neonatal nutritional support pharmacist: Specialised in fulfilling enteral and parenteral nutritional needs of NICU babies.
  • Developmental specialists: Support the physical and neurological development of newborns.
